Back Pain

7 Warning Signs That Your Back Pain Needs Attention

1.Your Back Pain Started After an Accident or Significant Injury

If your back pain began after a road accident, fall, sports injury, heavy impact or other significant trauma, don’t simply assume it is a muscle strain.

An injury can sometimes affect the bones, discs, joints or nerves of the spine. Even when the pain initially seems manageable, an assessment may be appropriate.

What to do:
If the injury was significant or you have severe pain, weakness, numbness or difficulty moving, seek medical assessment promptly.

2. The Pain Is Getting Worse Instead of Better

Most uncomplicated episodes of back pain gradually improve.

If your pain is becoming progressively worse, keeps returning, or is interfering more and more with walking, sleeping, working or normal daily activities, it is worth finding out why.

You don’t have to wait until the pain becomes unbearable before seeking help.

A professional assessment can help determine what may be contributing to your pain and what treatment is appropriate.

3. Your Back Pain Travels Into Your Leg

Pain that travels from the lower back into the buttock or leg can sometimes involve irritation of a nerve.

You may experience:

  • Pain travelling down the leg
  • Pins and needles
  • Numbness
  • Burning or electric-shock-like sensations
  • Weakness in the leg or foot

This is often described as sciatica, although not every pain travelling into the leg is caused by the sciatic nerve.

The important thing is not to diagnose yourself based on the location of the pain alone.

If your back pain is travelling into your leg, especially if you also have numbness or weakness, an assessment can help identify the likely cause and guide treatment.

4. You Have Numbness, Tingling or Weakness

Not all tingling means something serious. However, new or worsening neurological symptoms deserve attention.

Pay particular attention to:

  • Increasing numbness
  • Persistent pins and needles
  • Loss of sensation
  • Weakness in one or both legs
  • Difficulty walking normally
  • Your foot or ankle suddenly feeling weak

These symptoms can indicate involvement of the nerves supplying your legs.

Don’t simply keep stretching or exercising through new or worsening weakness. Get assessed.

5. You Have Back Pain Together With Fever or Feeling Unwell

Back pain accompanied by symptoms such as fever, chills, feeling generally unwell or unexplained weight loss can sometimes point to a medical problem that is not simply a mechanical back problem.

These situations require medical assessment rather than simply treating the pain.

Seek medical advice promptly if back pain is accompanied by fever, unexplained weight loss or significant illness.

6. Your Back Pain Is Worse at Night or You Have Unexplained Weight Loss

Pain that consistently wakes you from sleep, particularly when combined with other concerning symptoms, should not be dismissed.

Similarly, unexplained weight loss alongside new back pain deserves medical assessment.

These symptoms do not automatically mean you have a serious disease. Serious causes of back pain are uncommon. However, they are reasons for a healthcare professional to investigate further rather than assuming the pain is simply muscular.

7. You Notice Changes in Your Bladder or Bowel Function

This is one of the most important warning signs.

If your back pain is accompanied by:

  • Difficulty passing urine
  • Loss of bladder control
  • Loss of bowel control
  • New numbness around the genitals, anus or buttocks
  • Numbness affecting the area between your legs
  • Significant or rapidly worsening weakness in both legs

seek emergency medical attention immediately.

These symptoms can indicate severe compression of nerves in the lower spine, including the rare but serious condition known as cauda equina syndrome. This requires urgent assessment.

So, Does Every Backache Need Medical Attention? No

Most back pain is not caused by a dangerous condition, and many episodes improve within a few weeks.

If your pain is mild, started after a familiar activity and is gradually improving, staying active and avoiding prolonged bed rest may be appropriate.

However, you should consider professional assessment when:

  • Your pain is persistent or keeps returning
  • It is interfering with work, sleep or normal activities
  • You are relying on painkillers to get through the day
  • Pain is travelling into your leg
  • You have numbness, tingling or weakness
  • You are unsure what is causing the pain
  • Self-care has not helped

You don’t need to wait until your back pain becomes severe.

What Happens When You Come to Chiropractic & Physiotherapy Health Centre for Back Pain?

One of the biggest mistakes people make is trying to treat back pain based only on where it hurts.

Back pain is a symptom—not a diagnosis.

At Chiropractic & Physiotherapy Health Centre, our first step is to understand what is happening.

Your assessment may include:

1. Understanding your symptoms
We discuss when the pain started, what makes it better or worse, your daily activities, previous injuries and other relevant symptoms.

2. Physical assessment
We assess your movement, strength, flexibility, posture and relevant neurological signs where appropriate.

3.Spine Scan
We use our spine scanning technology to assess areas of tension and imbalance around the muscles and nerves of the spine. This helps us identify problem areas that may be contributing to your symptoms and those that have no symptoms yet but are problematic.

4. Identifying contributing factors
Your pain may be influenced by several factors, including prolonged sitting, lifting technique, reduced strength, restricted movement, training load, previous injury or other musculoskeletal problems.

5. Creating an appropriate treatment plan
Depending on the findings, treatment may include physiotherapy, exercise rehabilitation, manual therapy, chiropractic care, education and advice on how to manage your back in everyday life.

What If Your Back Pain Needs another specialist Instead?

That’s okay.

A good musculoskeletal assessment isn’t about trying to treat every type of back pain ourselves.

If your symptoms suggest that you need a nuerologist, an orthopaedic doctor, or another specialist we can advise you on the appropriate next step rather than simply treating the pain and hoping it goes away.

Your safety comes first.

Don’t Wait Until Back Pain Controls Your Life

You don’t have to live with back pain simply because you’ve had it for months—or because everyone tells you that “back pain is normal.”

Persistent pain deserves an explanation.

Whether your pain started from sitting at a desk, lifting at the gym, driving, sports, an old injury or for no obvious reason, getting the right assessment can help you understand what is happening and what you can do about it.
