Is your neck painful, tight or difficult to move? Don’t just learn to live with it.
Neck pain and stiffness are common. You might notice it after sleeping awkwardly, spending hours at your computer, looking down at your phone, driving for long periods or simply waking up one morning unable to turn your head properly.
Sometimes it settles within a few days.
But if your neck pain keeps coming back, is getting worse or is affecting your everyday life, it may be time to have it assessed.
At Chiropractic & Physiotherapy Health Centre, we assess neck pain and stiffness to understand what may be causing your symptoms and determine the most appropriate treatment for you.
What does neck pain or stiffness feel like?
Neck problems can feel different from person to person.
You may experience:
- Pain when turning or bending your neck
- A stiff or “locked” feeling
- Tight muscles around your neck and shoulders
- Pain that extends into your shoulders or upper back
- Headaches associated with neck discomfort
- Reduced ability to turn your head while driving
- Pain that becomes worse after sitting at a desk or using your phone
- Pain or stiffness that is worse when you wake up
You may also notice that your neck feels fine at certain times of the day but becomes painful after particular activities.
Why does my neck hurt?
There isn’t always one single cause.
Neck pain can develop from muscle strain, prolonged postures, repetitive activities, awkward sleeping positions, previous injuries or changes affecting the joints and discs of the neck.
For example, spending hours looking down at your phone or working at a computer can place your neck in the same position for a long time. This can contribute to muscle tension and discomfort.
An awkward sleeping position can also leave you waking up with a stiff, painful neck.
And sometimes, the problem isn’t simply about what you did last night. Repeated strain, poor movement habits or an old injury may be contributing to symptoms that keep returning.
When should you seek help for neck pain?
A mild episode that is gradually improving may settle with simple self-care.
However, you should consider booking an assessment if:
Your neck pain keeps coming back
If you regularly wake up with neck pain or find yourself repeatedly experiencing stiffness, don’t keep treating each episode separately.
Recurring symptoms may be a sign that something in your movement, posture, muscle function or daily routine needs attention.
Your pain isn’t improving
If your neck pain continues despite giving it time and trying reasonable self-care, it is worth getting assessed rather than simply continuing to wait.
Your movement is becoming restricted
If you can’t comfortably turn your head, look over your shoulder or move your neck normally, an assessment can help identify what is limiting your movement.
The pain is affecting your work or daily life
You shouldn’t have to constantly adjust how you work, drive, sleep or exercise because of your neck.
If neck pain is interfering with your normal activities, that’s a good reason to seek professional help.
Pain travels into your shoulder or arm
Neck problems can sometimes involve irritation or compression of nerves, which may cause pain, tingling, numbness or weakness into the arm or hand. These symptoms should be assessed.
What happens when you come to Chiropractic & Physiotherapy Health Centre?
Our aim isn’t simply to find the most painful spot and treat it.
We want to understand why your neck is hurting.
Your assessment may include:
1. Understanding your symptoms
We’ll discuss when your pain started, what makes it better or worse, your sleeping position, work setup, phone use, activities, previous injuries and any other symptoms you may be experiencing.
2. Physical assessment
We assess relevant aspects of your:
- Neck movement
- Posture
- Muscle tension
- Joint mobility
- Strength
- Flexibility
- Neurological function, where appropriate
This helps us determine what may be contributing to your symptoms and whether chiropractic care, physiotherapy or another approach is appropriate.
3. Spine Scan
Where appropriate, we also use our spine scanning technology to assess areas of muscular tension and imbalance around the spine.
The scan is considered together with your history and physical assessment — it is not used on its own to determine the cause of your pain.
How can chiropractic care or physiotherapy help?
Treatment depends on what we find during your assessment.
Depending on your individual needs, this may include:
- Hands-on treatment
- Chiropractic care
- Physiotherapy
- Therapeutic exercises
- Mobility and stretching exercises
- Strengthening exercises
- Posture and ergonomic advice
- Advice on work and daily movement habits
The goal isn’t simply to make your neck feel better for a few hours.
We want to help you move more comfortably and give you practical strategies to reduce the likelihood of the problem continually coming back.
What can you do at home?
For mild neck pain, staying gently active and avoiding prolonged positions can help. Gentle neck movement may also help maintain mobility. A pillow that supports your neck comfortably and reviewing your sleeping position may be useful if symptoms are worse in the morning.
Try to avoid spending long periods with your head in the same position. If you’re working at a computer or using your phone, take regular movement breaks and change position regularly.
Don’t force painful stretches or aggressively manipulate your own neck.
When is neck pain an emergency?
Most neck pain isn’t an emergency. However, seek urgent medical attention if your neck pain:
- Started after a significant accident, fall or other injury
- Occurs with a high fever and severe headache or marked neck stiffness
- Is associated with loss of bladder or bowel control
- Is accompanied by difficulty breathing or swallowing
These symptoms can indicate a condition requiring medical assessment rather than routine musculoskeletal treatment.
Don’t let neck pain become your normal
A stiff neck after an awkward night’s sleep may settle on its own.
But if you’re regularly waking up with neck pain, struggling to turn your head, experiencing recurring stiffness or finding that your neck is affecting your work and everyday activities, it’s worth finding out what’s causing it.
At Chiropractic & Physiotherapy Health Centre, our chiropractors and physiotherapists can assess your symptoms, identify factors that may be contributing to your neck pain and recommend an appropriate treatment plan.
Your neck shouldn’t have to hurt every day.
